Driving an electric vehicle for two thousand kilometres across Maharashtra sounds like the perfect way to test the promise of modern mobility. With expanding highways, improving infrastructure and growing awareness around sustainable transport, the stage seems set for a seamless long distance EV adventure. The reality, however, turned out to be a tale of two very different experiences. The highways were effortless. The charging was not.
The journey began with optimism. Maharashtra boasts some of the best highway networks in India, connecting major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad and Nagpur with wide lanes and smooth tarmac. Cruising in an EV on these roads feels remarkably refined. The instant torque makes overtaking simple and confident, while the near silent cabin transforms long stretches into calm, almost meditative drives. Without engine vibrations or gear shifts, fatigue is noticeably reduced even after several hours behind the wheel.
Regenerative braking added another layer of efficiency during ghat sections and city traffic. Watching the range estimate stabilize or even increase slightly on downhill stretches gave a sense of satisfaction unique to electric driving. Planning speeds carefully and maintaining steady cruising made it possible to extract impressive real world range from a single charge. On the move, the EV felt every bit as capable as its petrol or diesel counterparts.
The real challenge began when the battery indicator started dipping toward lower levels. While charging infrastructure in Maharashtra has expanded in recent years, consistency remains a concern. Some charging stations were easy to locate and worked exactly as expected. Others were either out of service, difficult to access, or located in poorly lit areas that did not inspire confidence during late night stops.
Waiting time added another layer of complexity. Fast chargers, when functional, significantly reduced downtime, but they were not always available or unoccupied. In a few cases, multiple EV owners arrived simultaneously, leading to unexpected queues. Unlike a conventional fuel stop that takes only a few minutes, charging required careful scheduling, patience and backup plans.
Payment systems and app integrations were another hurdle. Different charging networks required separate applications, account setups and payment methods. Network glitches occasionally interrupted sessions, forcing restarts and adding to the delay. While none of these issues were insurmountable, they demanded flexibility and extra time in an already long journey.
Despite the challenges, the trip offered valuable insights. Highway driving in an EV across Maharashtra is undeniably smooth, comfortable and efficient. The vehicle performance itself inspires confidence and proves that electric cars are fully capable of handling extended road trips. However, charging infrastructure still needs greater reliability, standardization and wider distribution to make such journeys truly effortless.
