GRAP III Returns to Delhi What You Can Drive and What You Cannot

The reimposition of GRAP III in Delhi has once again brought daily travel under scrutiny as authorities tighten measures to combat rising air pollution levels. The Graded Response Action Plan is activated when air quality deteriorates sharply and Stage Three focuses heavily on curbing vehicular emissions which remain one of the biggest contributors to toxic air in the region. With this phase back in force across Delhi and parts of the National Capital Region commuters are being urged to check whether their vehicles are compliant before heading out.

Under GRAP III the use of older and more polluting vehicles is restricted to immediately reduce emissions on roads. Petrol vehicles that meet only BS III emission standards are not allowed to ply while diesel four wheelers and light motor vehicles that fall under BS IV norms are also barred. This restriction applies to private cars as well as non essential commercial vehicles. Diesel generator sets are prohibited too except in cases involving emergency or essential services. Entry of non compliant inter state diesel buses is restricted unless they meet cleaner fuel or emission requirements.

At the same time several categories of vehicles continue to be allowed to operate to ensure essential mobility and services are not disrupted. Electric vehicles and CNG powered vehicles face no restrictions and are encouraged as cleaner alternatives. BS VI compliant vehicles including diesel cars that meet the latest emission norms are permitted on roads. Vehicles engaged in essential services such as ambulances fire services sanitation and supply of essential goods like food and medicines are exempted from most restrictions. Public transport that runs on CNG electricity or meets BS VI standards is also allowed to operate to keep the city moving.
