Starting February 1, the process of getting a FASTag for new cars in India is set to become significantly simpler with the removal of the Know Your Vehicle requirement. This change applies to personal vehicles such as cars, jeeps and vans and is expected to reduce delays and inconvenience faced by vehicle owners during FASTag activation.
Until now, even after submitting valid documents and receiving a FASTag, vehicle owners were often required to complete an additional Know Your Vehicle process. This involved uploading vehicle photographs and details to verify that the FASTag was correctly linked to the vehicle. In many cases, this extra step caused confusion, repeated follow ups and delays in activation, especially for buyers of brand new vehicles.
With the new rule coming into effect from February 1, the Know Your Vehicle process will no longer be required for newly issued FASTags for personal vehicles. Instead of post issuance verification, banks and FASTag issuing agencies will complete vehicle verification upfront before activating the tag. This verification will be done using official vehicle records such as the VAHAN database or the registration certificate where required. As a result, FASTags will be issued in a ready to use state without the need for any further action from the customer.
For existing FASTag users, the change also brings relief. Know Your Vehicle checks will no longer be a routine requirement and will only be carried out in specific cases such as complaints related to incorrect tag usage or suspected misuse. This means most vehicle owners with already active FASTags will not need to go through additional verification steps.
The decision to discontinue mandatory Know Your Vehicle checks for new cars has been taken to improve user experience and streamline the FASTag ecosystem. By shifting the responsibility of verification entirely to issuing banks before activation, authorities aim to ensure accuracy while removing unnecessary friction for customers.
