A disturbing incident in Kalyan has once again brought the issue of passenger safety in app based transport services into focus after a woman alleged that she was assaulted by a bike taxi rider during a booked trip. The accused has been arrested by the police following a swift investigation, according to officials familiar with the case.
The incident reportedly occurred when the woman booked a bike taxi to travel to her destination within Kalyan. During the ride, the rider allegedly diverted the vehicle from the usual route and took her to a deserted area. The woman later told the police that the rider assaulted her and attempted to rob her, leaving her traumatised. Her cries for help reportedly attracted the attention of nearby residents, who intervened and helped restrain the accused until the police arrived.
Following the complaint, the police registered a case and took the rider into custody. He was later produced before a court and remanded to police custody for further questioning. Authorities are investigating whether the accused was involved in similar incidents in the past and are examining the background verification process followed by the bike taxi service involved.
The case has triggered renewed concerns about the safety measures adopted by app based bike taxi operators, especially for women passengers. Questions are being raised about driver verification, route monitoring, and emergency response systems. Transport officials have also begun reviewing whether the service was operating in compliance with local transport regulations.
