A horrific road accident on the Bengaluru Tumakuru highway claimed five lives late Saturday night after a speeding car jumped the median and crashed head on into a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus. The tragedy occurred near the Jindal flyover on the busy national highway, sending shockwaves across the region and once again raising serious concerns about overspeeding on city outskirts.
According to police, the car was travelling at high speed towards Bengaluru when the driver allegedly lost control. The vehicle rammed into the central divider, mounted the median and landed on the opposite carriageway before colliding directly with an oncoming bus operated by the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation. The impact was devastating, leaving the car completely mangled.
All five occupants of the car, reportedly young men in their late teens and early twenties, lost their lives in the crash. Four died on the spot while the fifth succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. The victims are said to be residents of Doddaballapur. Their sudden deaths have left their families and local community in deep grief.
The bus was carrying more than forty passengers at the time of the accident and was headed towards Hubballi. Fortunately, none of the passengers suffered serious injuries, though the front portion of the bus sustained damage. Emergency services rushed to the spot soon after the collision, and traffic on the highway was disrupted for several hours as authorities cleared the wreckage.
Preliminary investigations indicate that overspeeding may have been the primary cause of the accident. Police have registered a case and are continuing their inquiry to determine the exact sequence of events. Officials have reiterated the need for responsible driving, particularly on high speed corridors such as the Bengaluru Tumakuru highway, which witnesses heavy traffic round the clock.
