A Mother’s Cry for Justice After a Tragic Night on Delhi’s Roads

The streets of West Delhi turned fatal in the early hours of Saturday when a young delivery executive lost his life in a speeding car accident that has left a grieving mother pleading for justice. The victim, Hem Shankar, was just twenty five years old and worked long hours delivering groceries to support his family. For his mother Rukmini, he was not only a son but her only source of strength and financial support.

The accident took place near the Subhash Nagar Metro red light on Najafgarh Road. Hem was riding his electric scooter during a late night delivery shift when a speeding Hyundai car allegedly rammed into him from behind. The impact was severe. He was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital but doctors could not save him. In a matter of hours, a routine night of work turned into a lifelong tragedy for his family.

According to police, the driver has been identified as Mohit Kumar, reportedly a contractor associated with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Authorities have taken him into custody, seized the vehicle, and registered a case. The investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the crash, including whether overspeeding or intoxication played a role. Eyewitnesses have claimed the vehicle was moving at a dangerously high speed before it struck Hem’s scooter.

For Rukmini, however, legal procedures offer little comfort. She has publicly expressed her heartbreak, saying her son had eaten dinner at home and left for work like any other day. She waited for him to return, unaware that she would instead receive the devastating news of his death. Her grief is compounded by the uncertainty of the future. Hem was the sole earning member of the household, and his absence leaves both emotional and financial wounds.

This tragedy once again highlights the growing dangers faced by delivery workers who navigate busy roads at all hours to meet tight deadlines. As India’s gig economy expands rapidly, so does the pressure on young riders who often work through the night to earn a living. Road safety concerns remain a serious issue, especially in metropolitan cities where speeding and reckless driving continue to claim lives.

The case has sparked renewed debate about accountability and stricter enforcement of traffic laws. Families like Hem’s are not just seeking compensation but justice and assurance that negligence on the road will not go unpunished. Whether through stronger penalties, better road monitoring, or stricter licensing checks, many believe urgent action is needed to prevent such heartbreaking incidents from repeating.
