Somkiat Chantra’s preparations for the 2026 Superbike World Championship have hit an unexpected roadblock after the Thai rider underwent surgery on both of his arms, leaving his recovery timeline uncertain and raising questions about his availability for the start of the season. The development comes at a crucial moment, as teams and riders are gearing up for pre season testing and final preparations ahead of the opening race.
Somkiat Chantra suffered the injuries during a private training session, where an accident resulted in a fracture to his right forearm along with damage to his left arm. Following medical evaluations, doctors recommended surgery to ensure proper healing and to reduce the risk of long term complications. The procedure was carried out successfully in Bangkok, and while the operation itself went according to plan, doctors have not yet committed to a clear recovery schedule.
The right forearm has been placed in a cast, indicating a more serious injury that will require time and careful rehabilitation. The left arm, although injured, did not require casting, suggesting a comparatively milder issue. Even so, competing at the highest level of superbike racing demands full physical fitness, and any lingering weakness or discomfort could significantly affect performance and safety on track.
For Chantra and his team at Honda HRC, the uncertainty is particularly challenging. Pre season testing is vital for adapting to bike updates, refining race setups, and building confidence ahead of the championship. Missing these sessions can put a rider on the back foot once the season begins. As things stand, Chantra is expected to miss the early test outings, and his participation in later sessions remains in doubt.
The situation has also sparked speculation about contingency plans within the team, should Chantra be unable to return in time for the opening round of the Superbike World Championship. Teams at this level are accustomed to preparing backup options, especially when injuries threaten race readiness, but any substitute would still face the challenge of limited preparation time.
