Fernando Alonso once again proved that his love for speed goes far beyond the racetrack after being spotted driving one of the rarest and most expensive supercars in the world through the streets of Monaco. The two time Formula One world champion was seen behind the wheel of the legendary Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR a machine valued at around £13 million and limited to just 28 road legal examples globally.
Originally built in the late 1990s as a homologation special for GT racing the CLK GTR is regarded as a piece of motorsport history rather than just a supercar. It was developed at remarkable speed to meet racing regulations and brought race car engineering directly to public roads. Under the bodywork sits a powerful V12 engine producing more than 600 horsepower enabling astonishing performance figures that remain impressive even by modern standards. Its extreme rarity combined with its racing pedigree has seen its value surge dramatically in recent years making any public appearance a major event for car enthusiasts.
Alonso’s relaxed drive through Monaco quickly caught attention with fans and photographers sharing images and videos across social media. Monaco is no stranger to exotic cars but seeing such a historically significant and scarcely seen vehicle navigating its narrow streets made the moment stand out even in a city known for luxury and excess. For many collectors the CLK GTR is a museum piece rarely driven which made Alonso’s decision to take it out all the more special.
