A tragic road accident in Delhi has once again highlighted serious concerns over traffic safety and accountability, after a bike taxi rider lost his life when he was run over by a water tanker. The incident occurred in the Geeta Colony area of East Delhi, where the victim was reportedly riding his motorcycle as part of his bike taxi service when the accident took place.
According to initial reports, the rider lost balance and fell on the road, moments before a water tanker coming from behind ran over him. The tanker was carrying a full load of water, and the impact proved fatal, killing the rider on the spot. Locals alerted the police immediately, and officers reached the scene to find the victim trapped beneath the rear tyre of the tanker.
The deceased has been identified as a 26 year old man who had come to Delhi from Uttar Pradesh in search of work. Like many others, he had taken up bike taxi riding as a source of livelihood. His sudden death has left his family devastated and raised fresh questions about the safety of two wheeler riders on Delhi’s congested roads.
What has further intensified public anger is the fact that the tanker driver fled the spot soon after the accident. The vehicle has since been seized, and police are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding areas to trace the driver. Officials have also confirmed that the tanker was linked to the Delhi Jal Board, adding another layer to the investigation.
A case has been registered, and a post mortem examination is being conducted to complete legal formalities. Police have assured that efforts are underway to identify and arrest the absconding driver at the earliest. Meanwhile, the incident has reignited discussions around stricter monitoring of heavy vehicles, enforcement of traffic rules, and the urgent need to ensure safer working conditions for bike taxi riders who face risks daily on city roads.
